Single on Valentine’s Day – Show Yourself Some Love

I don’t know about you but at times, like around Valentine’s Day, I feel like a pariah. I’m single with no children and not interested in changing the status quo on either issue despite being carpet bombed with hints by my mother. Seriously mom, I’m fully aware that I’m not getting any younger but I don’t think my ovaries are going to shrivel into raisins at the stroke of midnight on my 40th birthday.

Anyway, when you live in a society that is obsessed with coupling and making babies, life can certainly make you feel like a loser if you happen to be single on Valentine’s Day. I don’t know how many times I’ve had some form of the following conversation with attached women:

Welcome to 2011

…and my new blog. I’m happy to say that one of my goals has been officially completed this year. But it was the easiest. I’ve done the blogging thing before so getting setup, transferring things over, and finding plugins was no problem.

The only thing I’m still kind of stuck on is the theme. I’ve found plenty of free ones that I liked but there were always something that I needed to tweak and I didn’t want to be bothered with web design issues at the moment. I really want to focus on getting some blog posts written and creating a section for my stories. Eventually, though, the theme will change.

I ended the year the same way I lived it. Not doing much. I hung out with friends, had a few drinks, tweeted a little, and watched the party in New York on television. All in all, though, 2011 kind of rolled in on a whisper rather than a shout. But my minimal partying doesn’t belie the significance of 2011. Not only did we end a year, we also ended our first decade of a new millennium and began the second.

I looked back over the past ten years for inspiration about what I should do with the next ten years. I don’t believe in making New Year’s resolutions anymore because I always break them by the end of the month. Once I made a resolution to stop drinking coffee. I didn’t even make it to the next morning. I’ve decided to put it in my will that someone will have to visit my grave everyday and pour coffee on my plot.

Happy Thanksgiving

I just wanted to take a moment from shoving food into my face to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Despite the personal challenges I have faced in my life, I have much to be thankful for. I am thankful for my family and friends, for my good health, my home, the food I eat, my skills and talents, and the abundance of opportunity that surrounds me.

The Truth About Saint Valentine and Valentine’s Day

Not much is known about the saint Valentine’s Day is based on. In the Catholic martyrologies there is mention of not one but three men named Valentinus who the holiday could be honoring. One was a priest who, according to the Nuremberg Chronicles, was caught helping Christians during a time when doing so was a big no-no. The story claims that Claudius II sentenced him to death when he refused to renounce Christianity. This priest made friends with the jailer’s daughter, used the power of his faith to cure her blindness and deafness, and left her a love note on the day of his death.
